James Comey isn’t the biggest fan of encryption.
He took the opportunity yesterday at The National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee to voice his displeasure with services, like WhatsApp, that use encrypted messaging — a move that Comey explained could lead to future litigation.
“WhatsApp has over a billion customers, overwhelmingly good people, but in that billion customers are terrorists and criminals, so that now-ubiquitous feature of all WhatsApp products will affect both sides of the house,” Comey said.

What blowhards like Comey don’t understand is that for each service like WhatsApp or Telegram the FBI shuts down, another will take its place, and it’s not even remotely possible to tame technological advancement in the encryption space. If terrorists and criminals want to communicate secretly, they’ll find a way to do it. Technology hasn’t changed that fact, it’s just made it harder to stamp out.
